The popular Arturo 'Zambo' Cavero died on October 9, 2009 from complications of sepsis in Rebagliati Hospital in Lima. At his 68 years, Cavero, an Afro-Peruvian, was renowned for his interpretation of Creole music, which combines Spanish-style guitar playing with African beats. His most famous song was Contigo Peru. He was considered a symbol of Peruvian identity. The president, Alan Garcia, said 'More than being a prodigious voice, our Pavarotti, he gave us his heart in every note, he oozed kindness and infected us with his affection. That's why we loved him.', also he gave Cavero the higest honor in Peru, the Orden del Sol.
